I’ve been very busy the last few months and have struggled to focus on writing posts. I have a lot of catching up to do, so I figured I would start with my trip this past May when I traveled to Colorado to attend the 34th annual SCAN Symposium in Keystone, Colorado.
SCAN is the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. As a Registered Dietitian, I am required to obtain 75 continuing education credits every 5 years. Even if there wasn’t that requirement, it is very important to stay up to date with current research and recommendations since things are always changing. One reason that I love attending SCAN Symposium is that they always have great speakers and the topics are relevant to my areas of interest. It doesn’t hurt that they always pick great locations!
Some of my favorite parts of this year’s symposium include:
- Key Note session All About Altitude and how it affects your body. Tips: stay hydrated! Also, be aware being at a high altitude can suppress your hunger cues.
- Two sessions discussing the Non-Diet approach and HAES (Health At Every Size)
- The importance of recognizing eating disorders and how to help athletes recover
- There is a gap in research when it comes to creating guidelines for active individuals. More research is focused on preventing deficiencies/illness or performance of elite athletes.
And my favorite poster presentation:
- The effects of consuming an ice slurry on body temperature in elite wheelchair rugby athletes. Players stated that they felt cooler even though the data showed similar body temperatures. It was awesome to see some more research on adaptive athletes though!
My trip wasn’t all about learning though, I made sure to have plenty of fun (despite having an awful cold and no voice) and do some networking! I reconnected with many RD’s I’ve met in the past, as well as met plenty of new ones. Here are photos of some of my favorite moments.
